Dona nobis Pacem – Esa-Pekka Salonen
Until Forever Ends (World Premiere!) – Geoffrey Gibbs
Dona nobis Pacem – R. Vaughn Williams
For the final concert of our 61st season, Maestro Markward has chosen a world premier by local Rhode Island composer, Geoffrey Gibbs.
LOVE AND PEACE: TWO JOURNEYS
It is a privilege to present in our final concert the world premiere of Rhode Island composer Geoffrey Gibbs’ Until Forever Ends. The poetry was written by Alonzo Gibbs, Geoffrey’s father, from his courtship of Geoffrey’s mother beginning in 1934 until her passing in 1983. As such, this work bears witness to an enduring and steadfast love. Ralph Vaughan Williams” Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace) was composed in 1936 as a plea for peace by referring to recent wars during the growing fears of a new one. His texts were taken from the Mass, three poems by Walt Whitman, a political speech, and sections of the Bible. The phrase “Dona nobis pacem” punctuates the entire work. Esa-Pekka Salonen’s touching Dona nobis pacem opens this program of timely music.
